Buying a Bike in Korea vs. Shipping One from the US

Buying a Bike in Korea vs. Shipping One from the US

Why buying local might be the smartest move you make at your new duty station

You just got orders to Korea. You love your bike — or you're thinking about getting one before you leave. Either way, the question comes up:

Should I buy a bike in the US and bring it? Or just get one here in Korea?

We get this question almost every week at the shop. Here's what you need to know.

Option 1: Bring Your Bike from the US

If you already own a bike, absolutely bring it. Here's how:

Fly it with you (cheapest)

Most major airlines let you check a bike as luggage with no extra oversize fee:

Airline Cost Notes
Korean Air Free Counts as one checked bag. Under 292cm / 32kg
Asiana Free Under 23kg, included in baggage allowance
United Free No oversize fee for bikes
Delta ~$35 Standard first bag fee
American ~$35 Standard first bag fee

You'll need a bike box or travel case. Ask your local bike shop to box it up, or pick up a cardboard bike box — most shops give them away for free.

Ship it in your HHG (easiest)

Your military Household Goods (HHG) shipment can include your bike — no extra charge. Under SOFA, your personal belongings enter Korea duty-free.

The catch? HHG takes 6 weeks to 3 months to arrive. You might be riding a rental for a while.

Also worth knowing: movers aren't always gentle with bikes. If it's a high-end carbon frame, consider flying it with you instead.

Ship it separately (most expensive)

Services like BikeFlights or ShipBikes run $400–600+ to Korea. FedEx/UPS direct can hit $1,000+. Unless you have a very specific reason, this usually isn't worth it.

Option 2: Buy a Bike in the US and Ship It to Korea

This is where it gets tricky.

Trek (and most major brands) won't ship directly from the US to Korea. Each country has its own distribution rules. The Trek US website only ships within the US. Same goes for Specialized, Giant, and others.

So if you want to buy a new bike in the US and get it to Korea, you'd need to:

  1. Have a friend or family member purchase it at a US shop
  2. Have them pack and ship it to you internationally
  3. Pay $400–600+ in shipping

And here's the thing — the warranty gets registered under the buyer's name. So your friend in Texas is now the warranty holder, not you. That means any future warranty claim has to go through them, which is a logistical headache you don't need.

The Price Surprise: Korea Is Actually Cheaper

This is the part that surprises most people.

Since the 2025 US tariff increases, Trek bikes in Korea are often cheaper than in the US. Here's a real comparison (April 2026, USD equivalent at ~1,500 KRW/$):

Model US Price Korea Price (USD) You Save
Domane SL 7 Gen 4 $6,800 ~$3,527 $3,273
Domane SL 5 Gen 4 $3,800 ~$2,467 $1,333
Madone SL 7 Gen 8 $6,600 ~$5,167 $1,433
Madone SL 5 Gen 8 $3,500 ~$2,567 $933
FX 2 Gen 4 $900 ~$627 $273
Domane AL 2 Gen 4 $1,200 ~$967 $233

That's not a typo. A Domane SL 7 is over $3,000 cheaper in Korea. The US tariffs on imported goods (most bikes are manufactured in Asia) pushed American retail prices up significantly, while Korean prices stayed stable.

Even on entry-level bikes like the FX 2, you're saving a couple hundred dollars.

Warranty: It's Global

One concern people have: "If I buy in Korea, what happens to my warranty when I PCS back to the States?"

Trek offers a worldwide lifetime warranty on frames and forks. It doesn't matter where you bought the bike — the warranty follows the bike globally. If something goes wrong with your frame after you move back to the US (or anywhere else), any Trek authorized dealer can process the claim.

So buying in Korea doesn't mean you're giving up warranty coverage. You get the same protection as if you bought it stateside.

The Hidden Advantage: Buying Local

Beyond price and warranty, there's a practical reality that online specs and price charts don't capture.

Bike fit matters more than you think

A bike that doesn't fit you properly will hurt — knees, back, neck, hands. And it'll make every ride less enjoyable. When you buy at a local shop, you get fitted on the spot. The saddle height, reach, handlebar position — all dialed in before you ride out the door.

Ordering a bike from overseas? You're guessing on size based on a chart. And if it's wrong, returning an international shipment is a nightmare.

Ongoing service and support

Bikes need maintenance — brake adjustments, derailleur tuning, cable replacement, wheel truing. Having a shop nearby that knows your bike and speaks your language makes a huge difference, especially in a country where most local shops operate in Korean only.

Community

A good bike shop isn't just a store — it's a hub. Group rides, route recommendations, tips on where to go and what to avoid. That's hard to get from an online purchase 7,000 miles away.
